We are the SISSA Children’s University, engaging dozens of schools and hundreds of students of all ages every year.
The project is part of eucu.net, the network connecting Children’s Universities across Europe.

Our Program
Every Thursday morning, we welcome a school class to SISSA for a short journey into the world of contemporary research, through talks, interactive games, and many other activities.
The visiting classes come from primary, middle, or high schools, and they arrive from all over Italy!
Our goal is to break down stereotypes and reveal the true faces of those who do science — in all their diversity — inspiring curiosity and enthusiasm for research.
How to participate
Researchers at SISSA are the beating heart of the SISSA for Schools program. They are the ones who meet and guide the visiting students, sharing their work and their passion for science.
If you choose to join the programme, you can take part either as a Speaker or as a Helper.
You don’t need to speak Italian to participate in visits for high school students. If you speak other languages, you can also help as a translator for visiting students who don’t speak Italian.

As a Speaker, we’ll help you design a talk or interactive activity connected to your field of research.
You can also take inspiration from many activities developed in the past by your colleagues.

As a Helper, you’ll guide the class as they explore SISSA during an activity that’s already been designed for students.
No preparation needed: all you need is the enthusiasm to share your experience!

What you get:

Flexible commitment
You’re free to choose when to join, how much time to commit, and what role to take on during visits.

How can I contact you?
Click here to join the volunteers list. You can also email us (visite_scuole@medialab.sissa.it) or come to talk us during our office hour: every Thursday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the small room in front of the reception.
Can I join even if I don’t speak Italian?
Yes! You can participate in high school visits either as a Speaker or a Helper, addressing students in English. You might also act as a translator for non-Italian-speaking visitors, if needed.
I’ve signed up as a volunteer. How do I join a Thursday visit?
You can check the annual visit calendar (you received it by email when registering) and write your name next to the date that works best for you. For each Thursday, you’ll see which class is visiting and how many Speakers and Helpers are needed. If it’s your first time, send us an email: we’d love to get to know you!
Can I sign up for a visit if I’m not sure I’ll be available?
Once you sign up, we count on your presence that day. Please register only if you’re sure you can join.
How do I cancel my participation in a visit?
If you can no longer join a Thursday visit, please don’t just remove your name from the calendar. Let us know as soon as possible via email and we’ll find another volunteer.
What if I’m not available on Thursday mornings?
In addition to Thursday visits, SISSA for Schools includes other spin-off activities. Contact us to learn more!
What happens during a SISSA for Schools Thursday?
The class usually arrives at SISSA around 9:30 a.m. and is welcomed by the organizers in the Big Meeting Room (7th floor) for an introductory presentation. Then, the Speaker leads their activity (approx. 45 minutes). After a short break in the cafeteria or garden, younger students take part in a treasure hunt with the Helpers, while high schoolers go on a guided tour of SISSA. Middle school students join a discussion game that doesn’t require Helpers. The class leaves around 12:30 p.m. If you sign up for a Thursday, you’ll receive the full schedule by email a few days before.
What exactly does the Helper do?
During elementary school visits, Helpers support children in a super fun treasure hunt through the SISSA main building. The activity is ready-to-go, and Helpers have all the answers, so it’s very easy! During High school visits, Helpers guide a small group of students around SISSA, talk about their work, and answer questions. Again, no preperation is needed.
Can I be a Speaker without creating a new talk?
All talks are designed to highlight the personal research of our volunteers, but that doesn’t mean starting from scratch! We have many tried-and-tested activities from all SISSA disciplines, built over the years with the help of other researchers.
I have a new idea for a talk or activity. Can I propose it?
Absolutely! If you have a new talk or interactive format in mind, get in touch. We’ll support you in turning your idea into a great SISSA for Schools experience.
